A local lad, I grew up in Idle and Thackley and attended Belle Vue Boy’s Grammar School, Bradford before graduating from Leeds University in 1979 with a B.Ed (Hons) degree in Education and Music. I taught at several local schools in the Bradford district before taking early retirement in 1997 after 18 years service. At that time also I played in several brass bands and orchestras and sang with a number of choral societies.
I retrained at Craven College, Skipton in Ecology and Land Management, starting my own landscaping business in the year 2000. In 2014 I teamed up with Craig Wintersgill of Wintersgill Gardens and we now operate under the umbrella of Bingley Landscapes Ltd, specialising in Hard Landscaping and Dry Stone Walling, providing bespoke landscaping projects to the private sector.
I am married to Janet, have one daughter, Gemma, and currently live in Bingley. My leisure time is taken up with hill-walking and I am qualified as a Walk Leader for HF Holidays taking guests on walking holidays in the upland areas of Britain. When not doing that I can usually be found on the golf course at The Shipley Golf Club where I have served on the Greens Committee and still work closely with Greens Staff in a consultancy role.
