This was always going to be a major re-design of an entire garden space requiring the introduction of several new and varied elements to try and create interest in an otherwise flat, wet and uninteresting area of lawn. In the event it took six weeks and involved drainage re-routing and a lot of structural work to achieve the variation in levels. The customer presented us with a basic plan and we tweaked this through consultation to make it more practical and workable.
The preparation involved the removal of all the turfs and the installation of several runs of deep drainage to alleviate the excessive problem of lying water. We then built a 700mm high border incorporating steps with Oak landscaping sleepers and in-filled with 30 tonne of hardcore to level the site.
A rendered block wall completed the perimeter works and further raised areas were constructed to provide interest and functional areas for a barbecue, raised flower beds and the base for a future summer-house. A section was laid to lawn and finally the remaining surface was paved.
